Supplement Policy.

This document outlines the safe use, need, risks and potential consequences of taking supplements. Please read it carefully.

What is a Supplement

A supplement is any substance that is consumed by you deliberately to enhance your daily diet (nutritional supplement), cause a performance enhancing or ergogenic effect (performance supplement), or taken to self-treat ill health or injury.

‘Any food the purpose of which is to supplement the normal diet and which is a concentrated source of a vitamin or mineral or other substance with a nutritional or physiological effect, alone or in combination and is sold in dose form’ - Department of Health & Social Care, 2021

Medication

Any medication that has been prescribed to you by a health care professional is not a supplement, and does not fall under this Supplement Policy. However, it is your responsibility to check all your medication on Global DRO to ensure it does not contain any prohibited substances in sport - www.globaldro.com

Food Regulations and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)

Food supplements in the UK are regulated as foods under general food law, including the Food Information Regulations 2014 and the Food Supplements Regulations 2003. However, there is no requirement for sport safety or doping consideration under food law. If ingredients are less than 25% in a final food product, they do not need to be listed on the label. Thus, the use of supplements must be done with the upmost care, as contaminated products could result in an unintentional doping offence under the WADA code. You, the athlete, are solely responsible for any substance violation - www.wada-ama.org/en/what-we-do/world-anti-doping-code

Ordering Supplements Online - Informed Sport

Supplements purchased online, especially from overseas, can pose a threat to your health and performance. To ensure safety, it is recommended to check all supplements at Informed Sport, a regulating body for sports performance supplements - www.informed-sport.co.uk

Assess the Need

What is the supplement, and why do you need it?

Has it been recommended to you by the SENr Performance Nutritionist?

Are you fuelling optimally, training smart, giving yourself the best recovery time, and following the recommendations of the SENr Performance Nutritionist?

Assess the Risk

After assessment with the SENr Performance Nutritionist, if a supplement is thought to be advisable (e.g., an electrolyte isotonic drink to support fuelling and hydration status), it is important that you, the athlete, use batch-tested supplements ONLY - www.informed-sport.co.uk

Assess the Consequences

The use of supplements is the ‘icing on top of the cake’ not the foundation. The arbitrary use of supplements may have unintended consequences for both your health and your performance in sports. Finally, a positive drug test as a result of any banned substance, supplement or not, could result in a ban from all sports, not just the one you compete in, for up to 4 years.

Education

The SENr Performance Nutritionist will present an education session on safe supplement use, not listed on the banned WADA list. The session must be attended and completed within 14 days of this Supplement Policy's date. It is the athlete's responsibility to book and attend the education session.

Declaration

When accessing to our services, you, the athlete, confirm you have read and understood all information stated on this Supplement Policy and therefore understand that you are solely responsible for all substances and supplements you consume. Last but not least, you confirm you will attend the supplement education session in the time frame stated to ensure you have the correct information to make informed supplement choices.
